Say Hello to the Mob Wife Aesthetic!

Say Hello to the Mob Wife Aesthetic!

Here’s what you need to know -

There is a viral tik tok fashion trend that’s been going around and making headlines for the past couple of weeks. Even though there are countless micro trends on this platform considered to be shallow and unrelated to the actual world, this one stands out as it draws inspiration from much loved hit films and iconic TV shows.

It’s also not every day you witness the legendary filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola weighing in on a tik tok trend. “I hear the ‘mob wife aesthetic’ is making a comeback…” wrote Coppola in an Instagram post last week. The director of ‘The Godfather’, has described that “the style of his sister, Talia Shire’s character ‘Connie Corleone’ was a sultry, delightful Italian princess.”

Apart from Coppola’s “The Godfather”, this style became iconic due to the actual mob wife characters from exceptional films and series like Scarface, American Hustle and The Sopranos. The signature of the mob wife aesthetic is all about a mix of animal prints, big lavish fur coats, heavy jewelry and heavier eyeliner, a high–volume hairdo and huge sunglasses that make your face look petite.

Beyond the fictional world, this style has been worn by women including celebrities even before tik tok made it a trend. Celebrities like Rihanna, Kendall Jenner, Dua Lipa, and Hailey Bieber are giving off major ‘mob wife’ energy by adorning elements like knee-high leather boots, larger-than-life fur coats, and a bold red lip to seal the deal.

According to Tik Tok creators, like Kayla Trivieri, she believes the ‘clean girl aesthetic‘ has been declared out and the ‘mob wife aesthetic’ is the trend you want to be seen in. She goes on to say “It’s an energy, an aura. It’s about being very forward and bold.”

While the style may appear lavish and extravagant at first glance, it's not solely about the price tag—it's more about making a statement. From bold jewelry by Schiaparelli to sleek leather pieces by Alaïa, and even selections from more accessible brands, like those found at thrift stores, can seamlessly fit into this aesthetic. Think leather, all-black ensembles paired with faux fur coats, hints of animal prints and chunky gold accessories.
